Chapter 1: Finding a venue

The most important part of planning a wedding is finding the perfect venue. Today, we scoured Pittsburgh in search of the ideal location(s) for our ceremony and reception.

Omni William Penn Hotel:
We were only interested in one of their 36 banquet/meeting rooms. The Urban Room is on the top floor and has a high-vaulted ceiling which added to the grandeur of the room. The size and overall ambiance were in line with our needs/wants but the price tag was too steep.

Pittsburgh's Grand Hall:
We did not have an appointment to see this venue but decided to drive by for an impromptu visit. From the outside, the facade was picturesque and we wish we could have seen the interior. The neighborhood seemed a little sketchy which may deter us from pursuing this location.

The National Aviary
This was one of our potential ceremony sites. Although the bird exhibits were fascinating and would make for a memorable wedding, the neon colored walls were too informal for our taste. However, I thought Joe was going to book the site immediately after he heard that a penguin could be used as a greeter as guests came to the reception. He now wants a penguin no matter where the venue may be...

The Grand Concourse
Again, we did not have an appointment but decided to stop by. We briefly walked through the restaurant and really liked the atmosphere. Unfortunately the restaurant was closed and we were unable to get any specific information. We may consider setting up an appointment and returning.

Phipps Conservatory
We saved the best for last. Although it is winter, we were still able to imagine the outdoor gardens in bloom and alive with color. We believe this would be a wonderful place for a wedding and reception; however, we are not the only ones with this vision. Phipps is in high demand and is booked almost entirely. We hope we can work something out!

Decisions, decisions...
